Léotard, Jules
   He was a gymnast who created the leotard in 1943. The garment is in one piece, covering the torso from the shoulder to pantie line. It is made of a stretch fabric that is form fitting to the body. The uniform of dancers and gymnasts, it is often accompanied by tights. The leotard became a fashion item in the 1950s when designers such as Claire McCardell discovered the freedom of movement they possessed. By the 1970s, technology assisted designers in expanding the leotard into fashionable activewear, as well as inspiring the bodysuit, catsuit, maillot, and unitard.
